Quick Nintendo Switch Game Reviews (Part 2)

I created a post last year where I made quick reviews on a number of Nintendo Switch games. Now that I have played many more Switch games since then, I am going to write a second part of my series of quick Switch game reviews. My thoughts are limited to a paragraph or two. Let us get started...

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD - For the record, I did not play the Wii version of the game, but I do find it ridiculous that Nintendo can charge full price for a game that is a decade old and released on a new system. However, I digress. Skyward Sword is still a very good Zelda game, even though there are aspects of the game that do not feel like a traditional Zelda game. Skyward Sword has great enemies, challenging dungeons, and fun weapons to use. I can also see some of the ideas implemented later in Breath of the Wild, such as the stamina meter. I found the motion controls to be awkward to use, so I switched to the normal controls. The normal controls still felt a little challenging to use, particularly when trying to use the right stick to swing your sword in a certain direction.

The biggest issue that I had with Skyward Sword was that the game felt too rigid and linear. Part of why Zelda is such an excellent series is that there is always a world that Link can explore without having to advance the story too much. For most of the areas in Skyward Sword, you are going in a straight line fighting enemies and trying to get to the next area. I found this to be disappointing for a Zelda game and why I say that there are aspects to this game that do not feel like a true Zelda game.

New Pokemon Snap - This is the best Pokemon game on the Switch. I understand that this new Pokemon Snap game is just the N64 version with better graphics, more areas to explore, and new Pokemon for taking pictures. However, there was no need to reinvent the wheel with this game. New Pokemon Snap was successful in capturing the spirit of the old game, and the graphics look sharp for a Switch game. It was awesome to see all these new Pokemon interact with each other, the environment, and yourself. I do not have many things negative to say, other than I do not care for the story, but this is not the point. I wanted to scratch my itch of taking pictures of Pokemon, and New Pokemon Snap delivered.

Paper Mario: The Origami King - I did not have fun playing this game. I will say that the writing is quite humorous at times and that the environments look inviting and stand out, but those are the only positive things about this game. The Origami King is boring and repetitive. You walk around, fight some enemies, and read some dialogue. Rinse and repeat. I am also not a fan of the combat system. Credit to Nintendo for trying something new, but having to solve a puzzle before attacking an enemy is a terrible implementation of a combat system. I do not ever want to think too hard when I play a video game, and Paper Mario: The Origami King gave me serious brain drain every time. After I beat the first major boss, I was ready to throw in the towel as the game left me both exhausted and bored at the same time.

Hades - I do not normally play rogue-like games, and I initially thought that I was not going to enjoy Hades. I was wrong. Hades is an excellent hack-and-slash rogue-like game with enjoyable combat, satisfying progression, and an interesting mythical story to boot. Hades is one of the best replayable games you will ever play, and with each attempt on trying to escape the underworld, you gain more knowledge that will aid you along as you go further and further. You can also crank up the difficulty on each run for an even bigger challenge. The music and audio is also excellent, and really pulls you into the experience. Hades is probably one of the best games on the Switch. I can keep going for runs and never feel bored.
