Amalfi Coast Part 1: The Picturesque Positano

The next day after we flew into Italy and checked into our hotel in Sorrento, we began our day tour exploring the Amalfi Coast. Right off the bat, I want to say how truly lucky I was to get to go to a place that many people around the world consider to be a bucket-list destination, including myself. The Amalfi Coast is an area that, prior to the tour, I have only read about and explored in Google Maps. I am so happy that I get to share my experience with you, and if you have the means to do so, you should absolutely spend some time on the Amalfi Coast. We went to the towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. This post will focus on our time in Positano.

We met our driver for the day in Sorrento. I forgot his name but he was a lovely and humorous fellow who was a massive SSC Napoli supporter and told us all about the region and Italian culture. As he drove, we reached the scenic road that snakes along the Amalfi Coast. I did not get the greatest pictures as we were in a moving car and the window tint did not work in my favor. The drive was a bit precarious as the road was high up on the cliff; one wrong move and we would have been a footnote in Italian road death statistics.

Just before we entered Positano, our driver stopped at a viewpoint at the Hotel Le Agavi. I walked up to the ledge to see the awe-inspiring view of the town and the bay. This was my “I cannot believe I am here” moment, and it felt like the most beautiful day to see this town. I saw the reflection of the clear sun glisten off the sparkling water below. I saw all the boats in the water enjoying the day. The entire town was on a hill, and so it looked like every building was on a step to the beach at the bottom. Having this view of the town of Positano made the whole day tour worth it.

Our driver dropped us outside a taxi parking area, and we were free to roam the town for a bit. We were walking the tiny streets of Positano with the occasional tiny car driving by. Everything felt so condensed and clean, which was what I expected with Europe. I sometimes felt like a giant walking down these streets, with the cars looking like they are not much bigger than I am.

We walked through some narrower alleys to get closer to the beach and see the boats in the water. I imagine that all the boats are full of rich people soaking up the sun. I imagine the people staying in Positano are all the rich people, which makes me glad that I am staying somewhere more budget-friendly like Sorrento (which is not saying much)

There was a mini public square area with souvenir shops and the church. It was a good place to get some more pictures of the town.

We did not have too much time in Positano as we had other stops to go to on the tour, but I was so happy to get to see this town. I do not see myself living here, however. Not just because of the cost of living, but everything looked and felt so bougie to me, which I do not identify with.

As we were leaving the town, we continued down the coastal road on the cliff where there was a rock face that looked like the Virgin Mary, which I thought was impressive.

Part 2 will continue with exploring the towns of Amalfi and Ravello.
