Review: The Brownie Hot Fudge From Dutch Dreams

On my wanderings around Toronto with a couple of friends, we went to a popular dessert spot that sold all kinds of Dutch desserts and candies. 'Dutch Dreams' was the name of the place, and based on the line that stretched outside; it seemed like a dessert spot that could not possibly disappoint. To put it bluntly, Dutch Dreams did not disappoint at all.

Dutch Dreams (36 Vaughan Rd, Toronto, ON) sells ice cream and many other Dutch-style desserts, sweets, and candies. The store itself looked busy and cluttered, not only with the amount of people that were in the store and on the attached outdoor sitting area, but the whole place was full of knickknacks and other trinkets. Picture frames containing newspaper articles, letters of praise from organizations, and other artwork covered the walls. Various souvenirs were hanging from the ceiling as if the place was a toy store. It felt like every bit of blank space had something adorning it, and the store felt a bit cluttered and claustrophobic for me.

I ordered the Brownie Hot Fudge, thinking that I was going to get a nice brownie topped with ice cream and hot fudge. I did not want anything too dressed up; I just wanted some chewy, cold goodness inside my tummy. However, the dessert spot had other ideas for me.

What I received as the Brownie Hot Fudge did not match my expectations at all, but maybe this is what I deserved for paying $12. A large plate laid in front of me, holding a monstrosity of edible dessert. The Brownie Hot Fudge started with a base of those two-bite brownies, topped with two scoops of ice cream (I chose vanilla and cookies & cream), whipped cream, cotton candy, and a piece of those Dutch waffle biscuits (called 'stroopwafels', after a quick Google search). Crushed almonds, strawberries, and blueberries garnished the dessert, in an attempt to make the dessert slightly healthy for you.

I did not know how I was going to eat the whole thing, as two people would be better suited to eating the dessert together. I will say that the Brownie Hot Fudge tasted incredible. The dessert exuded maximum flavor and satisfaction from all of the ingredients together, which seemed like Dutch Dreams created for this purpose. I struggled through the last bites of the Brownie Hot Fudge, but I managed to finish the whole thing.

I would absolutely come here again for dessert, but maybe I will stick with a simple ice cream cone instead.
