Why Is The Water Glowing Blue Around Me?

On my only nighttime excursion in Jamaica, my group and I went to Falmouth to go experience swimming in the Luminous Lagoon. The Luminous Lagoon is one of the few places in the world where in the nighttime, disturbances in the water (such as swimming or the movement of water boats) will cause microscopic plankton and organisms to emit a glowing blue light. This excursion was certainly unique in its experience, and I was glad to be a part of it.

Our group boarded the bus at our resort, as a dock on the shoreline of the lagoon awaited us. A small bar served us a free drink of tangy rum punch, as well as serving other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at an exorbitant cost. Guests can listen to music at a nearby sitting area, and there were tables where guests can play dominoes as well. The dock made for some picturesque views out to the lagoon, but the setting of the sun made for an even more stunning sight. The sunset over the lagoon was one of the beautiful sights I have ever seen in my life.

When nightfall came, we were ushered onto the boat and set off into the darkness in the middle of the lagoon. I sat in the back of the boat, and as I looked into the engine propelling us in the water, the disturbances caused by the engine created that luminous glow which made the lagoon so popular in the first place. I attempted to take some pictures, but it was difficult to capture the bioluminescent glow.

The boat stopped in the middle of the lagoon and the captain gave us the okay to finally jump out and swim around the boat. The boat captain told us that the water would be shallow, but when I jumped into the water, I immediately realized that I would not be able to touch the bottom of the sea floor with my feet. I was able to steady myself in the water, as I was a decent swimmer and I had the ability to float. Regardless, I was amazed to see the bioluminescent glow around me whenever I made some movements in the water. I tried to splash around in the water to see more of the blue glow, and I could see the blue glow around the other swimmers as well. I could imagine that if a criminal tried to escape the police by swimming in the lagoon, a capture by the police would soon follow.

After about twenty minutes of frolicking around in the glowing blue water, it was time to hop back into the boat, and head back into the dock. Although the experience was unlike any other excursion in the Caribbean, I would not go back to experience it again. I already took part in this fascinating excursion, so I do have the urge to go again. I would still recommend the excursion to anyone staying in Jamaica, as it is relatively inexpensive.
