Review: 17 Steakhouse and Bar

I went to 17 Steakhouse and bar, which is a fine dining restaurant in Mississauga, for a friend's birthday. I try not to go to these kinds of restaurants because they are incredibly expensive, but I have made an exception to this rule and decided to check this steakhouse out. If you have the funds, it does not hurt to go to a fine dining restaurant once in a while. Here are my thoughts.

First, I will talk about the restaurant itself. 17 Steakhouse and Bar had a sense of grandeur and prestige with its large front doors and intimate, dimmed look. There was an aquarium between the hallway and the bar area where children would always go and look at the fish. There was someone on a piano nearby who was playing covers of old songs, but I found the live music to be a little too loud for our nearby dinner conversation. The overall atmosphere felt classy, but minimalist in the decor. The menus were too large for our table. The service from the wait staff was good, but not up to the standard I expected from going to an upscale restaurant like this. Our waiter was friendly, but he would occasionally forget to bring the right cutlery for the steaks people have ordered.

I ordered the Wild Mushroom Risotto ($26) with a side of Roasted Cauliflower with Blue Cheese sauce ($12). The risotto was light and creamy, while the tough and tangy taste of the wild mushrooms complimented the risotto well. The roasted cauliflower, on the other hand, was a different story. The taste of the blue cheese sauce was so overpowering that I could not enjoy the cauliflower. I could not even finish the plate, as I asked my waiter to pack it up in a container so I could attempt to eat the cauliflower the next day. I had some Garlic Parmesan Fries as well, and at least they tasted good and well-seasoned.

The people I went with that ordered steaks said that the steaks were tasty, but if you were not getting a steak, then I would not recommend going to 17 Steakhouse and Bar. I went to Red Lobster the previous weekend, and it was better than 17 Steakhouse in almost every way. Red Lobster had better food at cheaper prices. For an upscale restaurant, the overall experience felt average, and frankly, I expected much better.
