Titanfall 2 (Campaign Mode) - Needs More Respect

Whenever I hear about 'Titanfall 2' nowadays, I think about the bargain bin at my local video game store where are there are a large number of copies of the game selling for $5. Even my local dollar store had copies of Titanfall 2 selling for $4. My copy of the game was a free download on the PSN store where it was free for a month. I am only getting to play the game now as I am working through my video game backlog during the COVID-19 lock down. It is a small shame that Titanfall 2 is considered a 'bargain bin' game when compared to similar first-person shooter games such as Halo, Battlefield, and Call of Duty, as Titanfall 2 is just as good as the games I have listed.

The campaign mode follows a soldier named Jack Cooper as he pilots his mentor's titan (named BT-7274) after his mentor's death as part of the 'Militia' in order to take on and expel the 'IMC' (the evil guys) from the Frontier. The story is simple enough to digest, but the gameplay is anything but simple. Titanfall 2 is a first person shooter, but the game also uses two additional core gameplay mechanics to create a cohesive and excellent experience. Titanfall heavily relies on platforming for the player to get from area to area with the use of double jumps and wall-running. The second mechanic is the use of titan-on-titan combat where you pilot BT to blow up enemy titans. You have access to various loadouts with different weapons and abilities, so there is freshness and a bit of strategy on how you want to destroy the enemy titans.

As you play the campaign mode, there is a budding friendship between the pilot and the titan, which complements the story well. I was also surprised by the significant emotional moments of the story. My only gripe about the campaign mode was that I wished it were longer. Titanfall 2's campaign length is on the shorter side when compared to similar FPS games. Other than that, with the game's incredibly low price tag, there is no reason why a gamer who has any interest in FPS games should not play Titanfall 2. Titanfall 2 is a critically acclaimed game, but considering how many copies I see of this game in the bargain bin, I wish Titanfall 2 received more of the respect it deserves.
