Cultured Individual's First-Half Recap of 2020

It is safe to say that this unexpected first half of 2020 did not go anyone's way, especially for me. The COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing global protests against systemic racism is creating a period of unrest in the world. However, I continued to write and create some pieces that I would like to revisit for this compilation post, as well as to see what I can do to salvage the second half of the year.

My obvious choice for the most important post I have written for the first half of 2020 is my post about my experiences living in the color of my skin. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, I felt that it was important to talk about the direct and indirect racism I have encountered over the years, and continue to face even now. I feel like there is an ingraining in modern society that if you have a darker skin tone, then you are stuck with an aura of untrustworthiness. It does not matter if you are the nicest and kindest soul. If you are not a white person, and especially if you are a brown or black person in society, it feels like there is a heightening of suspicions among white people, and among older white people in particular. We have so much more work to do in changing the mindsets and attitudes of the wider population and to help foster a true equal society. I am thinking about creating a second part of this post, but focusing more on the racism I have faced in the workplace.

The COVID-19 pandemic completely derailed (pun intended) my cross-country train trip to Vancouver, and the pandemic has been the subject of the creation of a number of posts on this blog. Some of my COVID-19 posts include explaining my thought processes in creating a blog post, as well as dealing with suspected COVID-19 symptoms myself. As the number of new cases continue to go down daily, businesses and establishments are slowly opening up in a bid to return to some sort of normalcy. I am going to try to squeeze in a trip to Quebec sometime later this year, just so I can enjoy some sort of a vacation this year.

Because of having to stay home most days due to the pandemic, I have been playing more video games and writing more reviews on the blog. The one game that I was most excited to review was my review of Shenmue III, a game 18 years in the making. I also recommend my reviews on Judgment, and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. I especially want to highlight my scathing criticisms on Pokemon Sword and Shield, which was by far one of the worst video games I have played in years.

I have gotten into reviewing the influx of football documentaries that have come out over the past few years. Watching Sunderland Til' I Die was an emotional roller coaster full of pain and heartbreak, and this was the best documentary that has a review on my blog. You can also watch my reviews on Matchday: Inside FC Barcelona and Maradona in Mexico.

I have a couple of other highlights that I want to share. My last outing before the COVID-19 pandemic saw myself go to a Feminist Art Fest, which was unlike any other festival I have went to, in terms of how eye-opening it was. I also want to the highlight the fact that I was on the one-year anniversary documentary of the Toronto Raptors winning the NBA championship, which was an interesting experience.

Who knows what the second half of 2020 was in store for me, but I will try to make the most of it. I am sure there will be more video game and documentary reviews on my blog, but I desperately want to write some travel posts as well. Let us keep looking forward...
