Florence Part 2: The Duomo And The Sculpture Of David

Part 1 of my Florence escapades is here.

After a fun-filled night walking around the streets of Florence, I was ready to do the same thing, but in the daytime. The main places I went to on my second day in Florence was the Duomo (Florence Cathedral) and Accademia Gallery, which displays Michelangelo's sculpture David

It was a beautiful morning in Florence. After having breakfast at our hotel, we walked over to take some pictures of the Duomo, officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. I have to say that the Duomo is a beautiful structure, with its gothic renaissance architecture. There was a big line-up of people waiting to enter the cathedral, but we were not going to do so, as we had to be somewhere at a certain time.

I did go and check out the Fiorentina team store, which was just up the road from the Duomo. I picked myself up a scarf to put somewhere in my room.

We had a reservation to go to the Accademia Gallery, which is an art museum with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts from Renaissance-era Italy and beyond. The Accademia Gallery had the same sort of feel as walking through the Vatican Museums, but with more manageable crowds. I always forget how graphic some of these depictions can be, so expect some nudity in some of these pictures.

There was a section of the museum with old musical instruments owned by rich and powerful Renaissance-era families such as the Medici family. Imagine having to play some of these classic instruments. I wonder if these instruments are properly tuned?

Down a large hall is the piece (penis) we were all here for. Here stands the sculpture of David, and the sculpture was much bigger than I expected. The sculpture had to have been around 25 feet (if you include the plinth he is standing on. You can walk around the sculpture, so you can be a pervert and check out David's backside if you really want.

There was a separate room in the museum full of sculptures and molds of different figures. There were some statues that were a bit provocative, but still cool.

Later for dinner, I had Italian pizza as per usual, and walked around the Ponte Vecchio at night, getting some more pictures.

I was also at a small Irish pub in Florence drinking a big glass of beer and watching the Roma-AC Milan match.

I really enjoyed my brief time in Florence, and it is probably my favorite city in Italy to walk around in. If there was one place where I would want to come back and explore again, it would probably be Florence.
