The Royal Canadian International Circus Was Surprisingly Decent

Earlier this summer, I went to go check out a travelling circus show at my local mall, called the Royal Canadian International Circus. Yes, this is going to be another circus show post following my outing with co-workers at Cirque du Soleil last year. I initially was not planning to go to this show, but my mother was pleading and begging me to take her to see the circus, as she has never been to the circus before. I ultimately gave in to her demand and I bought two tickets to see the show.

Tickets started at about $35 but you can buy VIP and ringside seating for a bit more money. We get to the circus tent and there were already a few queues to get into the tent. After about 10 minutes in the hot sun (and my mom giving her fan to a small child), security let us into the tent. We first passed through a smaller tent where the refreshments and toys were, and the prices for popcorn, sno-cones, and drinks were expensive. However, they were not as expensive as the toys the circus had on sale. These cheap toys that blew bubbles started at around $30 and more.

We walk into the big tent and we take our seats in the first row of VIP seating among the scramble of people trying to find good seats. Honestly, most of the seats gave you a good view of the ring, and the only “bad” seats were in the corners as the anchors and supports obstruct your view. Before the show and during intermission, they were salespeople walking through the aisles selling popcorn and those same cheap toys that the children could not resist.

Everyone found their seats and the show began. There were all kinds of different performers who performed their routine in front of the crowd. There were dancers, acrobats, balancing acts, and even a human cannonball, to name a few. Everyone was into it and everyone was clapping along. The final (and probably the most dangerous) act was the “Globe of Death” where stunt riders ride motorcycles inside a mesh steel ball. The fumes of the dirt bikes filled the tent during the stunt.

I want to discuss the value proposition of the Royal Canadian International Circus. I paid $80 for two VIP tickets to go see the RCIC and we had great seats. You can even find 2 for 1 ticket deals for the RCIC as well. I would have had to pay $150 for one Cirque ticket with a farther view of the ring. The RCIC will never match the production value of Cirque du Soleil, but I would say that the RCIC is maybe 70-80% as good as Cirque, which is not bad at all. If you do not spend a lot of money on concessions, the Royal Canadian International Circus is a good time for not that much money.

As of writing this post, I believe the Royal Canadian International Circus is wrapping up their 2024 dates, but if they continue their shows in 2025, I would recommend going to see the show.
