This will be the first of two blog posts of all the other things I experienced while staying in Halifax that did not need its own blog post. There are many things remaining to cover on my Halifax trip, including the waterfront, food and dessert spots, and interesting neighbourhoods and locales. This post will mostly cover the waterfront.
The street next to my hotel is Spring Garden Road, which is one of the major pedestrian and transit roads in Halifax. There were many restaurants, bars, and shops on this street, and the street is always busy with pedestrians and transit buses.
At the end of Spring Garden Road is the Halifax Memorial Library. Unfortunately, there were a few unhoused people who pitched their tents in the yard but they left me alone for the most part.
I was walking through downtown on the way to the waterfront, and the city looked so clean and inviting. The hot and beautiful day also amplified the beauty.
I get to the Halifax waterfront, and the area was teeming with life. There was a big area with many food vendors and dessert places, as well as a big area to sit and eat. Seafood was the catch of the day in these parts, as there were many stalls serving fish, shrimp, lobster, and other marine eats. There were plastic Adirondack chairs where you could sit and stare out into the water (and Dartmouth on the other side).
There was this yacht on a pier in the waterfront, so maybe Halifax in the summer is a popular destination for the wealthy?
The premier ice cream spot on the Halifax waterfront is Cows ice cream. Cows is based out of Prince Edward Island, but they have locations across Canada, including a couple of stalls on the Halifax waterfront. The ice cream prices were certainly steep, but a good ice cream was a treat for me for an evening on the waterfront.
While I was walking along the waterfront, I noticed a group of people dancing on some steps. This was not the first time I would see this on my Nova Scotia trip, as I also saw some people dancing to local folk music while walking around Dartmouth.
I managed to get some great pictures and videos in my time exploring the Halifax waterfront. In a lot of ways, the Halifax waterfront is like walking the Toronto waterfront, but without the super-tall buildings. Part two will have the rest of the Halifax things I checked out, so stay tuned.
