I am going to post some quick thoughts on the Canada vs. Dominica match that I went to yesterday.
Thinking about the Canadian Men's National Team by itself, I feel a small sense of optimism. There is a strong core of young, talented players with bright futures ahead of them, and even though I feel they may not necessarily get to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, I think the men's team can make a surprising run at the 2019 Gold Cup (assuming they qualify). These qualifying matches for the CONCACAF Nations League (which I still do not quite understand) will help to build team chemistry and a sense of togetherness.
The weather was typical for a mid-October night at BMO Field. A smaller-than-usual crowd turned up for this Canada match due to this weather, and the quality of the opposition. Regardless, there was a small contingent of us in sections 112/113/114 trying to liven the atmosphere up as best we could.
Although Canada won the match 5-0 against a Dominica side that offered nothing, the match itself was dull. Although this was technically a meaningful international match, Canada played like it was a friendly. It felt like a run out for the Canadian players instead of actually trying to win the match. The dullness of the match itself reflected on the atmosphere that we were trying to generate in the south end. The 90-minute match felt like 6 hours. I think with better opposition in a later stage of the tournament, you will obviously see a bigger crowd and a livelier atmosphere. With that said, I am still proud of our small contingent of supporters who came out to support the Canadian Men's National Team.
