While I was in Prince Edward Island, I stayed in Downtown Charlottetown, and I want to dedicate a post to my wanderings in this place. Charlottetown is not actually a town, but rather a city, and wandering around this city felt like walking through a small city in Ontario, such as Kitchener or St. Catharines. I still got that small-town feel from the city with its historic buildings and waterfront. I walked around Charlottetown at varying lengths on each day of my stay. I had rain on the first two days of my stay while I had clear weather on the remaining days. Anyways, here are my pics from my time in Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island.
On the first day, I was walking the streets of Charlottetown checking out the historic buildings, including a basilica and some coloured houses that reminded me of my trip to Lunenberg in Nova Scotia.
There was a monument in front of the P.E.I. Legislative building for those from the island who went to war.
I want to point out that the traffic lights in Prince Edward Island are unlike anything I have ever seen. There are two signals for red lights and each colour has its own distinct shape, which I thought was interesting.
I stayed at the Arts Hotel in Downtown Charlottetown, which was on the "entertainment district" street. Considering I was staying from Sunday to Wednesday, there was not much going on entertainment-wise. There were a few bars and restaurants to check out, and I did eat at a couple of these restaurants.
On the second day, I walked on the boardwalk over to the Prince Edward Battery which had a little bunker and some cannons. There were some great views of Charlottetown and the Charlottetown Harbour, despite the rainy gloominess.
I made a brief stop at the Charlottetown Waterfront, but the rain proved to be too much to check it out properly. I will get my chance on the next day.
I could not end my day without getting some ice cream from Cows, which is the well-known ice cream company on the east coast of Canada. There was some merch on sale at crazy-expensive prices, which was the norm.
The next day was beautiful, and I went to check out the pedestrian street in Charlottetown called Victoria Row. Victoria Row was a line of restaurants and bars on one side of the street while there would be live music happening on the other side of the street.
I then went to check out the waterfront, which was alive with tourists and restaurant-goers. There was a little food court with food stalls, and then there was a bigger building with souvenir shops and more restaurants. It looked like this was the place to be on a summer evening in Charlottetown.
Prince Edward Island is known as the home of "Anne of Green Gables" so I did see some things about the book, including specific souvenir shops and a musical.
It was nice spending some time in a city in Canada such as Charlottetown, which was busy in the summer but not too busy. I know I will most likely not be here again, so at least I got to enjoy what I could in what some call the "Birthplace of Canada".
