My weekend in Montreal was not just going to a football match and going to a couple of attractions. Here is everything else that was going on while I was in the city on this specific excursion.
After the Canada/Ireland match, I found myself walking around the Latin Quarter looking for a place to have a late-night drink before I head back to my hotel. It was a Friday night and there were many people looking to have a good time at the bars and clubs on the street. I was walking on some of the side streets to get back to my hotel, and there was a rave going on across the road. I was not dressed for the occasion.
There was one more attraction that I went to, and that was a laser and light show inside the Notre-Dame Basilica on the Saturday night. It did feel a bit like sacrilege to have something like a laser show inside a place of worship. There was a large lineup outside the cathedral but the line moved quickly so I could get inside and get a decent seat.
It was cool to see the interior of the church be all lit up prior to the actual show, but we were not allowed to film or take any pictures of the show once it started, which makes sense. The show was entertaining, and also weird for the fact that I was inside a church.
When the light show was over, I walked around the interior of the cathedral taking pictures of the various saints and the architecture.
I would end my nights at Bar Leonor which is just around the corner from the Travelodge that I was staying at and also open late. I would order my shot of liquor and sip on a Peroni as I take in my neon surroundings.
Another bar that I went to was the Cloakroom bar which was inside a men’s tailor shop. I walked in the front door waiting for a few seconds until a hidden door opened up and a waiter called me inside the bar, which was a speakeasy.
The bar itself was tiny and it was unusual in the fact that there was no set menu. You tell the bartender the kind of drink that you like and the bartender makes a cocktail for you based on what you tell the bartender. I had a couple of unique cocktails which were delicious.
I had my share of local cuisine on this little trip. I had Chinese food at Chez Chili in Chinatown, and some poutine at Poutineville, among other eats. I also went to some other bars including McLean’s Pub, which was great.
I also had some time to check out Jean-Talon Market and the other touristy areas. I think I used the Montreal Metro more times in a weekend than I would use the TTC in a summer.
Anyways, that was my time in Montreal in 2026. More pictures below, including pictures of murals as I was walking down Saint-Laurent Boulevard.
